Problem Set 1

This problem set is based on the in-class experiment conducted on Thursday, Jan. 15. Links are given here for a variety of aspects of the experiment. The questions you need to answer are given below. This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Jan 20.

Please answer the following questions. You will want to consult the instructions to the experiment given above. you will also want to examine the data given above. You may answer these questions however you like. Please be certain to support your answers with appropriate evidence. Do not feel you have to write too much -- simple, direct answers will be better answers.

  1. What can you say about the choice the group made in decision 1? If the group continued voting, would it have made a decision in which everyone would have benefited?

  2. What can you say about the choice the group made in decision 2? Is there any simiarlity between this decision and that made in decision 1 (think about the agenda, not just the outcome)?

  3. What can you say about the choice the group made in decision 3? Could the group have done better if everyone had voted to continue?

  4. There were three major changes to the rules in the three different decision settings. Based on the data, did those rules affect the choices made by the group?

  5. What general conclusion(s) can you draw from this experiment? (Hint, how well were the preference of individuals mapped into a group decision?)

Feel free to be creative in your analysis. However, don't stray too far from the main point of each question. Short answers are better than long answers.
