Abstract

We rely on a unique combination of survey and experimental data to evaluate attitudes and behavioral norms, drawn from a single, systematic random sample. This provides us with a way to assess both explicit and tacit norms. The results can help us advance the theory of nation-building by focusing on effects as well as on origins and content. They can also help us to explain how and when ethnic identity may be trumped by other norms.
