Overview of Experiment

A total of 646 subjects are included in the data set, with 252 from Tatarstan and 394 from Sakha. Experiments were conducted in May and June in Tatarstan and in June, July and September in Sakha. Subjects were drawn from the list of people who had previously been interviewed. As such the subjects are a sample of the population from these two Republics. Experiments were conducted in small villages, medium-sized cities and large urban areas. Experiments were limited to villages and medium-sized cities where at least 20 individuals had been surveyed. Some medium-sized cities were skipped, particularly in Sakha, where travel was difficult or impossible.

A total of 47 experimental sessions were conducted. Each session lasted approximately two hours. Twenty of the sessions were in Tatarstan and the remainder were in Sakha. Sessions averaged 13.8 subjects (ranging from a low of 7 to a maximum of 23). The average payoff was 540 rubles in Tatarstan and 558 rubles in Sakha (between $17.40 and $18.10 US). These payoffs were substantial, reflecting a week's wage or more for 62% of our subjects.

Subjects participated in the following kinds of experiments:

  • Dictator Game with Anonymous Partner in Same Republic
  • Dictator Game with Anonymous Partner in Different Republic
  • Recipient from Dictator in Same Republic
  • Recipient from Dictator in Different Republic
  • Recipient Choosing between 2 Dictators (Photo Stimulus)
  • Trust Game with Others in the Experiment
  • Ultimatum Game with Others in the Experiment
  • Risk Measure
